Local…ish

There's a joke in the name, and it's worth pausing on.

Local…ish. Not Local. Not Sonoma Made. Not one of those single confident words that promises every last item was grown, thrown, poured, or hand-stitched within a fifteen-mile radius.

Because that isn't quite true, and Lisa and Thomas aren't going to pretend it is.

A lot of what's on these shelves is from down the road — Sonoma County artisans, Russian River winemakers, hot sauce made in Monte Rio. And some of it came from a maker three counties over, or from a small company that happens to do one thing extraordinarily well somewhere else entirely. The name tells you that up front, which is a small and disarming thing to do, and it's the first sign you're somewhere good.

The refill station

Toward the middle of the shop is a long black table crowded with glass gallon jugs, each one wearing a pump and a hand-lettered label. This is the thing to build your visit around.

Bring a bottle. Any bottle — the empty lotion pump you've been guiltily tossing for years, a jar, the hand soap dispenser that's still perfectly fine except it's empty. Fill it. Pay for what's in it, not the plastic around it. There's a scale on the roll-top desk and a QR code on every jug, so you know exactly what you're getting and exactly what it costs.

And it's cheap. Ultra-concentrated unscented castile runs 50¢ an ounce. "Lots of Purpose," ready-to-use, is 25¢. There's floor cleaner concentrate, dishwasher gel, white cleaning vinegar, bubble bath in mint and eucalyptus, body milk and honey. Behind them, glass canisters of powders with little scoops and a hand-painted sign reading Laundry Today or Naked Tomorrow.

The math is quietly staggering once you sit with it. One bottle refilled monthly for a year is eleven bottles that never got made, never got shipped across an ocean, and never spent four centuries in a landfill working on their posture. Do that with your soap, your lotion, and your all-purpose spray, and you've personally pulled a small crate of plastic out of the world without changing anything about your life except where you go to get it.

The rotating cast

The other reason to come back: it's never quite the same shop twice.

The walls are the giveaway. A Pool Ridge Trail print from Armstrong Woods hangs next to an owl in a tree next to something in wild rainbow dots — all of it for sale, all of it rotating as makers surface and shelves get cleared for the next one. Jewelry in a lit case by the door. Candles, clothing, wine.

Then the pantry, which is its own small adventure: Fishwife tinned fish in those gorgeous painted boxes — smoked salmon, rainbow trout, mussels in basil pesto. Land & Local botanical syrups and shrubs, woman-owned, in hibiscus and blood orange fennel and blackberry chai. Patagonia Provisions pasta. Sauz sauces. Bamboo paper towels that are PFAS-free and bleach-free. Hot sauce from Monte Rio, because of course there is.

It means the shop rewards regulars. If you were in last month, you haven't seen it. Keeping it that way is constant work — finding makers, clearing space, starting over — and it's the reason the place feels alive.

The people behind it

Lisa and Thomas run it, and Lisa is usually the one behind the counter. It shows up in the reviews more than the products do — people mention her by name, mention feeling welcomed, mention that the two of them are clearly passionate about doing their part.

That's the thread through all of it: the refills, the rotating makers, the name that refuses to oversell. Someone decided to run a shop this way — carefully, honestly, one maker at a time — and then just… did it, on Main Street in Guerneville.
